James Russell

James Russell is an exhibition curator and art historian, best-known for his ongoing twenty-year-long study of Eric Ravilious and his circle. He wrote the four-volume series Ravilious in Pictures (Mainstone Press, 2009-12) and curated the exhibitions Ravilious (Dulwich Picture Gallery, 2015) and Tirzah Garwood: Beyond Ravilious (Dulwich, 2024). He is currently compiling the Catalogue Raisonné of Ravilious watercolours, which will be published in 2029 by Modern Art Press.

As well as curating the critically-acclaimed exhibition Soutine | Kossoff (Hastings Contemporary, 2023), James has put together numerous large-scale group exhibitions of modern British and contemporary art. Like his exhibitions, his lectures are thoroughly researched and accessible.
